With the holiday season quickly approaching, it’s important to remain healthy and not overindulge into a food coma. We all look forward to the holidays for the three F’s: family, friends, and food! You can still savor all the home cooked goodness while not having that extra cookie you probably don’t need. We’ve come up with a few tips on how to battle the holiday food season:

There are helpful resources online to help guide you in how much of what you should eat at a meal. We recommend having at least half of your plate be veggies, and the remaining half be made up of meat/protein and starches.

1. Portion your plate!

You know that you will be tempted to eating all the food you can while you’re home for the holidays, but by portioning your plate it allows you to still eat what you want in a healthier way. We recommend that half your plate be full of vegtables. The rest should be split between starches/carbs and meat/protein.

2. Swap unhealthy ingredients with healthy ones!

Instead of using sour cream, try nonfat Greek yogurt. Instead of canned fruits and vegetables, go for the real thing! Canned foods have a lot of preservatives in them that are high in sodium and other add ins that you really don’t need. Plus-fresh fruit and veggies taste a heck of a lot better than canned ones.

3. Drink a lot of water!

Water is extremely important to our health to keep us hydrated and flush out all the impurities in our bodies. Try spicing water up with some cucumbers and mint or buy some coconut water!
