This week’s Great Greek Spotlight honors southern belle and Sigma Sigma Sigma sister, Carrie Underwood.
Carrie was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on March 10th, 1983. Growing up, she enjoyed living on a farm and spending plenty of time outside with nature. Carrie also loved to sing for her friends and family. However, after graduating high school, Carrie decided she wanted to earn a degree in broadcast journalism. She enrolled at Northeastern State University and rushed Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority.
Deciding to finally pursue her singing dreams, Carrie auditioned for American Idol during her senior year in 2004. During her audition, the judges loved her strong unique singing voice so much that they invited her to Hollywood. Carrie went on to become the winner of American Idol’s fourth season.
In 2005, she released her first album, Some Hearts, which included her first single “Inside Your Heaven. The song hit the top of the Billboard charts almost immediately. Carries next biggest hit was “Jesus take the wheel”. The song lead Carrie down a path to success. She won the Academy of Country Music Award for single of the year and two Grammy Awards for best female country vocal performance and best new artist, in 2006.
After her first two hits, Carrie decided to switch up her music. She began recording harder-sounding songs including hit “Before He Cheats” and album carnival ride. At 26 years old, Carrie was inducted as the youngest member of the Grand Ole Opry on May 10th, 2008. She was inducted by another country star, Garth Brooks. Since then, Carrie has won the CMA Award for female vocalist of the year three years in a row and also has hosted the award ceremony with friend and country singer Brad Paisley.
Carrie spent the next few years writing, recording, and performing her music, releasing more hits including “Blown Away”, “Good Girl” and “Cowboy Casanova”. In the fall of 2014, Carrie released her newest album Greatest Hits: Decade #1. The album celebrates her previous success and also includes new hits for the nation to fall in love with.
