We are honoring the successful designer and Kappa Kappa Gamma sister, Kate Spade for this week’s Great Greek Spotlight.
On December 24,1962 Kate Spade was born as Katherine Brosnahan, in Kansas City, Missouri. Kate had a normal childhood growing up, going to several all girls private school with her sisters.
After high school, Kate attended the University of Kansas. Heading in another direction Kate decided to transfer to Arizona State University where she studied journalism and became a sister of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
When she was first starting out in 1986, Kate worked for Mademoiselle fashion magazine’s accessory department in Manhattan, New York City. During her time working for the magazine she met her now husband Andy Spade, and became the Senior Fashion Editor and Head of Accessories. In 1991, Kate decided to leave the magazine.
From her experience from working at Mademoiselle, Kate noticed the lack of stylish handbags and accessories. In 1993, Kate Spade launched her own handbag line as Kate Spade New York. Kate’s brand blossomed with the help of business partner and husband, Andy. The brand continued to grow, with bags and accessories being available in many high-end department stores.
In 1996, Kate Spade open her first store in Soho, New York City. From her great success, Kate was awarded by the Council of Fashion Designers of America as America’s new fashion talent in accessories.
Now Kate Spade New York has over 140 retail shops and outlet stores across the United States, and more than 175 shops internationally! Her accessories are also popular and worn by sisters in many different sororities.
