Every week we will be honoring a Great Greek Woman to celebrate and showcase all that Greek Life does!
This week we are honoring Leigh Ann Tuohy, a sister of Kappa Delta, who is an author and interior designer. However, she is most well-known for her role in the life of her adopted son, Michael Oher.
Leigh Ann was born in Tennessee and went on to attend University of Mississippi. While at Ole Miss she met her husband, Sean Tuohy, and was a member of Kappa Delta sorority as well as a cheerleader.
The Tuohy’s went on to own multiple fast food franchises and were raising 2 children in Memphis, TN when they met Michael Oher in 2004. Oher was a great football player but was being passed through different foster care homes. Oher attended school with Leigh Ann’s children. Leigh Ann and Sean decided to allow Oher to live with their family while providing love and support via tutoring and sports. They eventually adopted Oher and he went on to play football for Ole Miss and now the Baltimore Ravens.
The story of the Tuohy’s and Michael Oher went on to become an award winning book called “The Blind Side: The Evolution of the Game” by Michael Lewis. The book was turned into an Academy Award winning movie with Sandra Bullock playing the role of Leigh Ann.
Since the successful movie, Leigh Ann went on to write a book about the experience called “In A Heartbeat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving”. In 2010 she was added as one of the three design teams for ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
