Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity that changes your life in so many ways. It’s a great chance to meet some amazing people and experience a new culture. After all, how many chances do you get to live in another country for 4 months?! While it might not be for everyone, it doesn’t hurt to explore your options. So if this sounds like something you’d be interested in, then take a look at some of the steps to get started:
Pick a destination – You may already have a place in mind that you want to travel to but make sure you look at all of your options so you make the best decision for yourself. Language and culture are the biggest components to look at when deciding where to go. If you are studying a foreign language, then going to a country where your study of language is spoken is recommended. Culture is influenced by history, religion, language, geography, ect. There’s always going to be a bit of culture shock, but you should know what you’re getting into before you go! And if you can’t pick just one place, check out Semester At Sea.
Do your research – Along with picking a destination, you should do even more research once you’ve picked your location. You need to consider what program you’ll do it through, when you’re going to go, the cost, where you’re going to live, ect. You want to be as informed as possible before making a decision!
Talk to your adviser – Make sure all your credits will transfer and that you are eligible for your specific program.
Budget – Once you’re good to go with everything and you have applied, it’s time to budget. This may be the hardest part but it’s crucial! You’re going to need money for extra expenses like food, souvenirs, weekend trips, ect. Save, save, save!
