Today, we are honoring famous actress and Gamma Phi Beta sister, Kristen Chenoweth!
Kristen Chenoweth was born on July 24, 1968 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Starting at an early age, Kristen began to show interest in singing and acting. She acted in her school’s plays and would always sing gospel songs at church. During high school, she developed her talents through doing ballet, opera, acting, and singing.
Once she graduated high school, Kristen was determined to peruse a career in performance. She decided the first step in achieving her dreams was to attend Oklahoma City University, where she joined the Beta Omicron chapter of Gamma Phi Beta. At OCU, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in musical theater and a master’s degree in opera performance.
After finishing up her studies, Kristen headed to New York City in 1993. While supporting a friend who was auditioning for an off-Broadway musical, Animal Crackers, she ultimately decided to audition as well. The directors were blown away by her amazing ability to sing and act that they offered her a supporting role.
Kristen continued to perform in off-Broadway shows before landing the role of Precious McGuire in Steel Pier. Following her spectacular performance as Precious McGuire, she landed several roles on Broadway in the musicals Strike Up the Band and You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. Her performances on Broadway helped pave the way to success.
In 2001, Kristen appeared on the big screen. She was seen on ABC and NBC. Wanting to focus more on her singing, she released her first solo album, Let Yourself Go. Her strong powerful voice caught the attention of various producers. In 2003, Kristen was offered a starring role as Glinda in the Broadway hit Wicked. The Musical was a hit, which put Kristen in the spotlight. According to CNBC, Wicked’s sales are over 467.6 million dollars.
After a year performing as Glinda, Kristen went back to acting in front of the camera. She landed role in the television series The West Wing. By 2006, Kristen had appeared in six movies and two television shows, while acting in another Broadway musical. She continues to impress us with her talented acting skills and singing voice.
